It’s super frustrating that traditional Chinese courses and textbooks seem to assume that pronunciation is “done.” You know you still need to work on it, despite all the compliments you get from native speakers. That’s why on our Chinese Pronunciation Wiki the levels don’t stop at elementary. In fact, the intermediate (B1) level have some of the most crucial tonal content: the legendary tone pairs. Sounds the B1 (Intermediate) Pronunciation Test covers:

• Tough Sounds (basic): trickier phrases involving: s-sh-, c-ch-, z-zh-, x-sh-, q-ch- (“chūqù“, anyone?), j-zh-, r-, -e, -ou-uo, -ü-u, -un

• Tone Pairs: there are 16 tone pairs, plus four involving the neutral tone, and you need to master them all.

In a combination of simple reading and speaking exercises, we do an analysis of which B1 issues a learner needs to pay attention to.
